WFSK Is Seeking Old Photos & Audio for HBCU Radio Preservation Project
WFSK has been selected to participate in a national Pilot Project with the Ohio-based WYSO Archives--with its experience developing and using historical college audio archives—and the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) in Andover, MA to collect and digitize WFSK's rich history. The project includes a partnership with the John Hope & Aurelia Franklin Hope Library on the Fisk campus to co-host workshops, trainings and digitize the audio, articles, and photos from the station's near 50-year existence.
"We're asking the community to send in or drop off copies of any old broadcasts, tapes, pictures, etc. to be included inside the station's digital history which will be available online through the campus libraries Archival department", said Sharon Kay WFSK General Manager.
Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCU) radio stations have both participated in and documented the African American experience, including the Civil Rights era. There are currently 104 HBCUs, and of those, 29 have active radio stations.
Expressed in a 1970 campus article by then student & station organizer Emile Gardner, "the purpose of the proposed radio is to establish a more viable exchange of ideas and information through this medium."
Please contact the station at 615-329-8754 or by email to skay@fisk.edu for more information.
